Financial Independence (FIRE): What If Working Became a Choice?

Imagine having enough financial freedom to work because you want to, not because you have to.

That’s the idea behind FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early.

It’s not necessarily about retiring at 35. It’s about building enough wealth to give yourself more control over your time, career, and life.

The Six Types of FIRE

Traditional FIRE

Build enough invested wealth to cover your regular living expenses.

Lean FIRE

Achieve financial independence with a simpler, lower-cost lifestyle.

Fat FIRE

Build enough wealth to maintain a more expensive lifestyle.

Chubby FIRE

A comfortable middle ground with additional financial flexibility.

Coast FIRE

Invest enough early that your portfolio could grow toward your retirement target while your earnings cover current expenses.

Barista FIRE

Combine investments with part-time or flexible work.

How Much Do You Need?

A commonly discussed starting point is the 25× rule, based on a 4% initial annual withdrawal assumption.

For example, if you spend EGP 30,000 monthly:

Annual spending
EGP 360,000
Illustrative target at 4%
EGP 9 million
Illustrative target at 3%
EGP 12 million

These figures are in today’s purchasing power, not future pounds.

The 4% rule comes largely from historical U.S. retirement research. It’s not a guarantee, and applying it in Egypt requires additional consideration of inflation, investment risks, exchange rates, and retirement duration.

A USD illustration

USD 4,000 per month is USD 48,000 per year. At an illustrative 4% withdrawal rate, the target is USD 1.2 million; at 3%, USD 1.6 million. Both are in today’s purchasing power, before individual taxes and fees, and neither guarantees retirement success.

Can FIRE Work in Egypt?

The principles can apply, but your financial plan should reflect Egyptian realities.

Inflation, bank certificates, investments, property ownership, and currency exposure can all affect your financial independence target.

Also remember: your total net worth isn’t necessarily the amount available to fund retirement.

Financial independence isn’t just about how much money you have. It’s about how many choices that money gives you.

Start by understanding your spending, tracking your net worth, and building a sustainable savings and investment plan.
